It appears that the views of the Chamber on this question have undergone a change. As reported in my despatch No. 150 of the 21st of July last, the Chamber was strongly in favour of the legalization of the Japanese Yen; a resolution to that effect was unanimously adopted by the Chamber, and at the same meeting a Committee was appointed to consider the desirability of the coinage of a British Dollar equal in weight and fineness to the Mexican dollar. No action was taken by the Committee in furtherance of the suggestion for the coinage of a British dollar, and understanding that the idea had been abandoned in consequence of the cessation of the scarcity of Mexican dollars, I telegraphed on the 31st October last to that effect.
